Physiatry
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
The San Luis Valley Health Physiatry Department is located in the Occupational Medicine Clinic at 2115 Stuart Avenue in Alamosa. Physiatry is a medical specialty concerned with diagnosing, evaluating, and treating patients with pain due to physical disabilities or injuries.
The primary goal of a physiatrist is to help the patient achieve maximal restoration of physical function through comprehensive rehabilitation. At SLV Health, our physiatrists conduct a series of evaluations, including the use of electromyography (EMG).
When to Visit a Physiatrist
Our physiatrists understand that pain can dramatically affect your daily life. You should seek medical attention from a physiatrist near you to discuss available treatment options if you notice any of the following symptoms:
- Back pain (upper, mid, or lower spine)
- Continued pain after an injury or car accident
- Continued pain after surgery
- Muscle spasms
- Muscle weakness
- Numbness or tingling in your arms or legs
- Pain that prevents you from doing daily activities
- Shooting or sudden pain
These symptoms may be an indication of a more serious injury or condition like the following, which our doctor can diagnose and treat:
- Arthritis
- Bulging or herniated discs
- Complex regional pain syndrome
- Nerve damage (including pinched nerves)
- Sciatica
- Spinal cord injury
- Sports injuries
- Strains or sprains of the muscles
- Tendonitis
