Annual Walk Run a Groovy Success for 2024
SLV Health
The 21st annual Stephanie L. Miner Walk/Run event hosted by the San Luis Valley Health Foundation was a far-out success! Volunteers from SLVH and Adams State helped make the hippie-themed, “Peace, Love and Fight (cancer)” a success with balloon arches, bubble stations, and fun at Cole Park for the whole family on Saturday, September 21, 2024. Morgan Hykes designed the flower power shirts that were very well received.
Participants enjoyed groovy temporary tattoos, making bracelets, slime, foam pit, snacks, and free snow cones from the SnoShack. There were four bubble stations along the track for added fun! As they finished the course, participants tossed a flower in the Rio Grande River in memory of a loved one. They took their photo by the “I survived the walk” banner. The t-shirt quilt was auctioned off before the race/walk began, led by Kelly Gurule, SLVH Foundation Director. SLVH appreciates the generosity of Hoyt Anderson, Alamosa Building Supply, and La Jara Trading Post as the auction raised a record $3500! The Andersons donated it back to be displayed at the SLVH Conejos County Hospital. The quilt is a labor of love made by Bev Hettinger using t-shirts from former walks.
Roxann Sittler, SLV Health Foundation President, welcomed everyone and thanked the volunteers and the numerous sponsors for making the event a huge success. “We estimate we had around 500 participants who enjoyed a perfect morning before the skies opened up.”
The rainstorm began as the festivities in the park came to an end the family of Stephanie gathered in a circle to remember their loved one who passed away from breast cancer. The funds from the walk will benefit the MRI upgrade at the Regional Medical Center. SLV Health reminds the public to get their screenings, annual wellness visits, and vaccines!
