Stephanie L. Miner 5K Walk And Run To Fight All Cancers
The 11th annual Stephanie L. Miner 5K Walk and Run, one of the largest events in the San Luis Valley, is right around the corner, scheduled to take place on October 4th at 10:15 a.m. in Cole Park.
During past races, the 5K raised money for the Stephanie L. Miner Women’s Imaging Center, however, now the funds will support San Luis Valley Health’s effort to provide cancer services at San Luis Valley Health. By providing cancer services, patients will have an opportunity to receive treatment for various types of cancer, all while staying close to home.
Unlike some other fundraisers, one hundred percent of the funds will stay local.
“We wanted 50 walkers the first year, but instead had 250,” said Kelly Gurule, Director of San Luis Valley Health’s Foundation. “Every year it’s grown larger and larger. We had 900 participants last year. We need you to help us reach our new goal of $50,000 and hopefully set a record number of participants.”
Runners and walkers will gather at Cole Park to begin the race. As the trail comes to an end, participants will drop carnations into the Rio Grande River. Each flower represents someone affected by cancer, and participants will have an opportunity to reflect and reminisce through their memories of those affected by cancer.
The day will also feature events designed to provide fun for the whole family. There is a one-mile walk, costume contest, a kids’ obstacle course, and a prize for the largest race team. Recruit your friends so they can get in on the action!
After the race, the family of Stephanie L. Miner and friends invite you to enjoy a free potato bar, entertainment in the park and a T-shirt quilt auction.
In its fourth year, the “Support the Girls” store, will, once again, have imaginative items to purchase on race day for further support of this cause.
This is a great opportunity to come together as a community a support a wonderful cause. Pre-registration begins September 17 and costs $30. If you don’t pre-register by October 1, then you must pay $35 on the day of the race. Make sure to pre-register as soon as possible to get a free T-shirt that’s available only to the first 1,000 participants. To register, contact Foundation Director Kelly Gurule at (719) 587-5707.
The goal for this year’s fundraiser is $50.000.00. If you can’t attend, please consider donating online to help us reach our goal on our donation page. Thank you for your donation!
