Julian Maendel, MD
Julian D. Maendel, MD, is part of the outstanding general surgery team at San Luis Valley Health. He completed his residency, worked as a research assistant and was an Intern at New Hanover Regional Medical Center/University of North Carolina. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Colorado/School of Medicine. He actually was familiar with Alamosa and the San Luis Valley before he completed medical school, since he graduated with his bachelor degree from Adams State University after two years of volunteer service with La Puente and its Outreach program.
Dr. Maendel had not always known he wanted to be a doctor, even though he has siblings in the health care field. He just knew he wanted to help people. He knew the need for serving in an under-served area. At medical school, he loved the challenges around surgery and was drawn to a career that is so hands-on and continues to challenge him. International medicine is an interest of his, and he enjoyed his overseas work in the residency program.
Dr. Maendel loves history and plays the guitar. He and his wife Amy always have felt at home here in the San Luis Valley. They have two children and love to spend time in the outdoors doing what Coloradans do best: hike, ski, bike, play tennis & hockey, run and backpack!
In 2014, Dr. Maendel was awarded the Exceptional New Alumnus award and the story may be found at this link: https://www.adams.edu/news/sept1416.php
